Diseases of the heart and their remedies

It may be that Allah the Exalted withholds mercy so that it does not reach a palace, just as He may spread it in a shack. Happiness is not contained in objects, but resides within the person. That is why I claim that nowadays most people derive no benefit whatsoever from admonitions. After all, their hearts turn away from the Hereafter because they are preoccupied with this world, its pleasures, and its desires. They are not treated for their illnesses, their shortcomings, and their sins. Therefore, my words and my admonition will briefly focus on the heart, the organ about which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And in the body there is surely a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body will be sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body will be corrupt. Truly, it is the heart."

If the heart is good, that which is pure will come from the mouth. But if the heart is bad - may Allah protect us from this - the tongue will say bad things. The heart is like a lake into which rivers flow. If their water is healthy, the water of the lake will also be healthy. However, if their water is polluted, the water of the lake will be unhealthy. The rivers represent hearing, sight, and the tongue.
