The Authenticity of Prophetic Medicine

This book is a chapter from the sublime work of the eminent scholar, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (691 - 751 AH): Zaad al-Ma'aad. The author explains how we find the basic principles of medicine in the Quran, and how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) applied and clarified them in his Sunnah. In Islam, the health of the body is a fundamental necessity in human life, and therefore the Muslim is called upon to attach importance not only to their own health but also to the health of the community as a whole, so that the Muslim community remains strong. This can only become reality through the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding medicine, for we shall see that health encompasses both the health of the body and the health of the heart, and that only the knowledge of the Prophets, namely the Revelation, unites these two aspects in perfection. The medicine of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not like that of doctors, for his medicine is certain, formal, and divine. It stems from Revelation, from Prophecy, and from the perfection of intellect, whereas the medicine of others, or most of them, consists merely of conjectures, assumptions, and experiences. Prophetic medicine is only effective for the one who accepts it, believes in its healing, and receives it with perfect faith and submission.
