For My Sister, From My Sister

Covered from head to toe, with only the eyes visible, the sight of a Muslim woman on a Western street almost always evokes a strong reaction. Feelings of shock, shivers, disgust, pity—even fear—are not uncommon. But have you ever wondered what lies "behind the veil"? Have you ever wondered what her life is really like? And to what extent her hopes, dreams, and aspirations differ from your own? Well, in 'From My Sisters to My Sisters', Na'ima B. Robert lifts the veil for you on the way Muslim women live; most of them are converts to Islam, and they invite you to share in their joys, sorrows, convictions, and faith.

As Na'ima tells the gripping story of her own conversion to Islam, she also provides first-hand accounts from similarly remarkable women she has come to know over the years. Women like herself who have chosen to live as Muslims. This ultimately presents a vivid and intimate portrait of sisterhood. As they speak candidly about topics such as marriage, motherhood, stereotypes, submission, and self-image, we hear the strong, proud voices of those who are rarely heard.

Refreshing, controversial, and often surprising, 'From My Sisters to My Sisters' is an invitation to a world extended by those who usually only belong to the inner circle. It is a celebration of their womanhood and their friendship—a celebration of their Islam.
